There it was, the small gray mouse was right there, just a tail-length away. All she had to do was pounce and the mouse would be-

The small grey creature suddenly stiffened, and rose its snout into the air. They weren't alone. Midnightpaw, suddely cautious, parted her jaws slightly. Almost immediatly she froze.

The scent of fox was strong in the air.

The mouse apparently was too cautious to risk anything, and so was Midnightpaw. She bodly walked out into the clearing the mouse used to be in, and tried to get a better wiff of the Fox stench. Yes, prey was needed for the clan, but her safety was even better. Inhaling again, the small she-cat knew she was in trouble, for finding scent trails was a challenge for her. Little Midnightpaw silently padded her way around the clearing once more, searching for something other than fresh dew and undergroth.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Midnightpaw finally got another wiff of the scent. She let out a gleeful mrrow and padded after the scent. She knew her mentor, Shadowstar would have been extremly dissapointed in her for following a fox's trail like this; whwnever there was even the slightest hint of foxes being around, she would direct them the other way. This time, this time, though; she would show her mentor who was stronger. Once the small black apprentice bround back the body of a dead fox, she was sure she would be given her warrior ceremony right then and there. Just the thought made her flick the tip of her tail in excitement.

If only she knew how wrong she was about the trail...

~~~
Back in reality, little Midnightpaw was fast asleep in her den, oblivious to all the other appritices gtting their precious sleep cut short. Some of them growled at her, others sent her sleeping form jealous glares. One of the warriors in the den shook his head.
"Once Shadowstar finds out about this, she won't be happy..." He grumbled before padding out of the den with his own apprentice."Enjoy your sleep while you can..."
ShadowStar's tail twitched slightly and she gave a low growl at the news of her apprentice. Claws digging into the gravel beneath her paws, she turned towards the Apprentice Den and padded her way inside. She wasn't the least bit impressed. Not even the slightest.
"Where is she?" she called out to the other Apprentice cats. "Where is MidnightPaw?"  her ears were laid back slightly and her eyes narrowed as she looked around the crowd of cats.
One of the younger apprintices pointed a small paw in the direction of Midnightpaw's nest. The young kitten was the only one who knew that she spacifically picked that spot because she could blend in flawlessly with the undergrowth. Midnightpaw, oblivious to the comotion going on around her, only sighed and nestled herself deeper into the warm confines of her nest.
"Sh-she's over der," She squeaked, her eyes full of terror. "Sh-she sreeps there to stay hidden from evwyone else....."
ShadowStar nodded tot he kit and sighed, padding forward to MidnightPaw's nest and sitting down beside it. With a wide glance around the den, she reached out and placed her paw on MidnightPaw's shoulder, shaking the apprentice slightly to wake her.
"MidnightPaw, wake up. It's time that you got up and moved around with the rest of us wether injured or not"
Midnight paw groaned and attempted to turn to only way, only to freeze when she felt the paw on her shoulder. Then the scent. It was then she felt her life flash before her eyes, and fear rush through her sleepy body. The cat shot up, golden eyes wide open.
"AH, hello Shadowstar! I was just getting up!" Insert nervous laughter here.  Her facial expression shone that she was terrified of her mentor when she actually had to come and wake her, but most times she had been quite the friendly mentor. "Wh-what are we gonna' be doing today?"
Shadowstar's eyes narrowed as she looked down at her apprentice. "First, I expect you to tell me what it was that made you so mousebrained as to think you could take on a fox." she hissed slightly, her fur raising before she bent and gave her own chest a lick to smooth down her fur.
"And then after that, I'll decide your punishment for not only endangering yourself, but also the clan."
